Factors that influence dentist in the choice of direct restorative material


Summary

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate, through a questionnaire, the factors that are associated and that influence the dentist in the choice of direct restorative material in posterior teeth. Material and methods: The project was approved by the research ethics committee (CEPSH). Then, the questionaries was sent to dentists who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Those who agreed to participate signed the informed consent form and answered the questionnaire. After data collection, the data were analyzed statistically. Results: Among the 367 interviewees, 295 did not perform amalgam restorations, 54 (14,71%) said they performed an average of 1 to 10 per month; 10 interviewees (2,72%) perform an average of 10 to 20 restorations and 3 of them (0,82%) above 100. With regard to composite resin, only 6 (1,63%) of the interviewees report not using such restorative material. Sixty-four (17,44%) performed an average of 10 to 20 restorations per month, 59 (16,08%) performed 20 to 30 restorations, 56 (15,26%) 30 to 40 restorations and 49 (13,35%) from 40 to 50 restorations. Among the important factors that influence the choice of restorative material, the main one demonstrated by 308 (83,92%) dentists was aesthetics. However, 250 (68,12%) are against the replacement of amalgam by composite resin only for this reason. Among several important factors, the main one highlighted by the interviewed dentists was the patient's concern about esthetics, preferring a material that mimics the natural color of the tooth. Conclusion: It was concluded that among several factors important for the choice of restorative material, the main one highlighted by the interviewed dentist was the increasing demand for aesthetics.
